# Do I Need to Notify the DVLA When Scrapping My Car?

Yes, the DVLA must be notified when a vehicle is scrapped. This is a legal requirement, and failing to do it can cause you serious problems down the line.

When a car is scrapped at a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, the ATF is required to notify the DVLA electronically and issue a Certificate of Destruction (CoD). This officially takes you off the hook as the registered keeper.

If you don't notify the DVLA — or if you use an unlicensed scrapper who doesn't — you remain the registered keeper. That means you're liable for road tax, any parking tickets, speeding fines, or even crimes committed with the vehicle.

We've heard horror stories of people who sold their car to a dodgy scrapper, only to receive a court summons months later because the car was found abandoned and they were still listed as the keeper.
